Educate yourself first before educating others. Do not hesitate, no matter the circumstances.

To enable children to learn new information, to equip yourself so that you can lead a team efficiently, how much effort are you willing to put in? How much are you willing to sacrifice? Elva, from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, East Malaysia, has been flying back and forth to West Malaysia every month just to participate in training programs. Such frequent travels she did, all because Elva did not forget that first heart in education.

In 2014, prior to exposure of Yelaoshr, Elva was the Creative Mind Training Centre’s joint partner. The centre uses mind mapping techniques as their teaching methods and students’ participation ranges from primary 4 to university students. However, in the process of teaching, Elva realised that although the students have the ability to analyse important points, they have a problem with recognising words.

“To solve this issue, I started to google up about educational bodies that teach words recognising and I bumped into Yelaoshr.” – Elva

In order to gain experience from Yelaoshr, Elva negotiated many times.

Elva 叶老师 创意教学

“The common rule was that to be an entrepreneurship partner requires training at the Yelaoshr Learning Centre, to learn the full set of teaching methods after some time. Due to me living in East Malaysia, I was unable to cooperate and was rejected about five or six times. They told me the reason why I could not just undergo training and straightaway open a Yelaoshr Learning Centre in Sabah. I totally understand their concerns. However, after pleading for many more times, Yelaoshr finally made an exception to allow me to train in a week, then to open up a new centre in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.” – Elva

Reminiscing, Elva thinks that they finally understand that both have similar educational concepts and both parties felt like they have met a friend on the same path, thus, creating the opportunity for Yelaoshr to make an exception.

“My centre and Yelaoshr’s educational concepts are the same. We focused on building up our students’ foundation.” – Elva

Hence, since establishing the Yelaoshr Learning Centre, whenever students have a problem with recognising words at the Creative Mind Training Centre, they will join the classes at Yelaoshr in order for students to fully accept these teaching methods.

This exception has not made Elva felt lucky whereas it turned into a type of motivation, prompting her to be much more diligent than others.

“Everyone trained and taught for a much longer period than I did, and only half a year to a year later opened their centres. I only trained for a week, so whenever there are Yelaoshr training programs conducted in West Malaysia, I would attend them. – Elva

Elva notes that although the program contents are somewhat similar, yet the sharing by many teachers had benefited her.

“Every person’s personality, values and experience are different. Listening to the sharing of experiences by others always gave me new ideas.” – Elva

In addition to participating in the programs organised by Yelaoshr, Elva would take the opportunity to sign up for other courses when she comes to the west. For instance, the NLP program (neurolinguistic programming), leadership-related and communication courses. Currently, Elva flies over for about two times per month.

叶老师创意教学 Elva
Elva believes that continuous learning is an educator’s persistence.

Humbly, Elva notes that her learning abilities are weaker than others. Moreover, she was not keen on learning in the past; hence her educational level is only until Form 5 level. To be able to stand firm and set a foothold in the society, she understands that she needed to work harder, to sacrifice more energy to equip herself and not give up learning new things. There are many successful people in the society. Even if her career is on its tracks, she learns continuously, and this is our example.

When asked if she feels tired or numb due to the many courses she attended, Elva replied that in every stage of her life, everything she learnt and experienced is different. She believes that if she stops learning because her centre is doing well, or the number of students reached its target, she will not reach the peak of her life. Furthermore, Elva said that besides attending courses, applying the things she learnt on teachers, students and parents are also a part of learning. An example she pointed out was, “In these recent years, one thing that I love to encourage was ‘to start from myself’. A lot may comment that what he or she should do but I feel the need to start from ourselves to slowly influence the people around us. It does not matter if it is the implementation of a new technique or to quit some bad habits, the effects will be better than just giving advice or criticising others.”

Teacher Yap Elva
Gaining experience from the grandmaster.

Instead of saying Elva learnt many leadership and education ‘skills’, but to her, what’s most precious is the experiences after implementing information she listened and learn from class into real life. From Elva, we can deeply understand the true meaning of ‘there’s no end of learning’. Hey, isn’t this the “to start from myself” concept Elva shared working?

(Because of Elva, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah has its first Yelaoshr Creative Learning Centre, allowing local children with needs to benefit. Soon, this coming October, Elva will step foot in Miri to bring quality education to children there. We hope that more children will build their foundations strong in recognising words and love learning even more!)

#04 Learn to accept children for themselves

From time to time, I would think that the moment that parents most trusted their children is during the infancy period. We believed they can learn how to eat, walk, talk… However, what is the reason that when children stepped into the school, they started to lose trust in their children? That is because we adults started to compare. Xiao Ming from the house next door has such excellent results, but my child just barely passed… How did this happen? We started to question if our child is less intelligent, less hardworking… All sorts of negativity will be added on the child.

The course at Yelaoshr is a children-centred education system. Only when children truly understand the things they have learned, we will then proceed to the next step. Just give your children some time and patience; we have confidence that we can teach them to recognise words, even if they are three or four years old. Nevertheless, parents will feel that their children have wasted the tuition fees and disappointed them when results were not seen over time just because they do not believe that their children can do it.

As parents, we need to learn to accept our children for themselves. Many a time, when our children are unable to catch up with the syllabus set in the school, parents will start to be worried and afraid and they start to reproach their children. My child was in primary 3 and sometimes he does not know the multiplication table. Honestly, I can accept it because he does not understand why he needs to memorise the multiplication table. What is the function of the multiplication table? Of course, I will help him to learn how to memorise the multiplication table and not blame him on what he cannot do just because other children can. Because this is my child; this is he himself.

Just give it a thought, if no one sets a rule that primary 3 students need to memorise the multiplication table, will you feel it as a problem if a primary 3 cannot memorise it? You do not find it a problem, yes? We are always being fixed into the frames of society and forgot to give our children space to learn what they love; to follow their own interests and learn and grow. Even if a child reaches an age of 12 and their minds mature and can memorise the multiplication table, it is still a celebratory event, because he finally understands it!

叶老师创办人 叶怡怡 Teacher Yap

To me, these are not some new and fresh educational concepts. I just feel that these are natural events. It is time we place our focus on our child instead of other children, school teachers and even tuition teachers. A child’s every step in growth, be it fast or slow, is worth celebrating!

Be true to the heart of education – students will come if you have the right attitude

Sisters Crystal and Zi Ling are considered to be Yelaoshr’s seniors in the early days of establishment. Currently, they own four Yelaoshr Learning Centres at USJ Subang, Kota Kemuning, Bukit Tinggi and Bandar Parkland in Klang Valley. It seemed like a very successful business but who would have thought they used to face the challenge of having no student, no income and no ability to provide payrolls?

Today, we interviewed the elder sister, Crystal. When she finished her SPM at the age of 18, she enrolled a course for air stewardess. As they were available positions in the flight company she desired after finishing her studies, she brought the attitude of “I’ll do this for the time being” and joined Yelaoshr. Fate is so amazing, this ended up being her job with Yelaoshr for more than 10 years.

“I got the opportunity to teach some very special children at that time. They can just roll under the table because they do not want to study. However, through Yelaoshr’s teaching methods, I told them stories and built a relationship with them. Ultimately they actually quietly sit down to learn. This not only gave me a great sense of achievement and it also filled me with the joy of helping them to learn.” – Crystal

About a year later, Crystal was provided with the opportunity to manage a centre. She laughed, “I was teaching at the Sri Petaling Yelaoshr’s first learning centre. I performed exceptionally well with another colleague of mine at the centre, so the founder, Carol told us that ‘One mountain cannot hide two tigers’, and she decided to arrange me to Mahkota Cheras to help an investor manage the centre.” A very cheerful Crystal did not think much of it at that time; she just felt that if Carol gave her this mission meant that she was trusted to be able to handle the task. Hence, she was position as a centre’s person-in-charge from teaching.

“Later on, Carol gave me a mission to open a new learning centre.” – Crystal

Teacher Yap YelaoShr 叶老师 Bukit TInggi
左一:Crytal,Carol;右下:紫玲

Crystal, who had only worked for two or three years, where did she get the capital to establish a new centre? She applied for a personal loan, with additional support from her family finally managed to gather enough financially to open a centre. She brought her sister Zi Ling together to Subang Jaya to establish her very first Yelaoshr Learning Centre. Crystal was in charge of management while Zi Ling did the teaching. The efforts and plannings did not bring them off to a good start. In the first month, they were unable to recruit any students, did not have any income and could not even afford the payroll for the staff.

“It was truly a tough time. Yelaoshr was not very popular at the beginning and not many people will come to us.” – Crystal

Crystal described the situation as ‘setting foot into the business’ and could only persevere ob despite the hardships. Subsequently, they went to schools and homes to pass out brochures, telling themselves that they will have students, utilising the ‘Law of Attraction’. By the second month, they have recruited enough students to balance off the expenses and they finally passed the storm.

However, the events that happened later are enough to prove that Crystal’s positivity. Five months after establishing their first Yelaoshr Learning Centre, Crystal opened up her second centre.

“I was thinking that I have me and my sister; since the first centre is on its tracks, why not try to expand with a second centre? – Crystal

Crystal decided to joint venture with a colleague from Sri Petaling and opened her second centre at Kota Kemuning.

“I believe that where there are students, there is a need for Yelaoshr.” – Crystal

With such a simple belief, it allowed her to subsequently open her third (Bukit Tinggi) and fourth (Bandar Parkland, Klang) Yelaoshr.

Do not deter from that first purpose because of the workload

叶老师 教育事业
Crystal’s positivity and optimism, allowed her to lead a team of excellent members, helping countless students.

At the moment, Crystal goes back and forth between the four centres. She teachers if they are shorthanded in addition to most of the time communicating with the parents. To this she expresses, “From a business perspective, the parents are our sources of income; but we cannot bring forth this attitude to meet with the parents as this concept will affect the communication between us and the parents. Why so? Because I have done it before.”

Crystal revealed that she would not recruit just any student. Only students who undergo the test and require help will be accepted. Students who have a high ability to learn are those Crystal would not recruit. From a business perspective, this practice will definitely affect business performance.

“Initially when I was helping an investor to manage the centre, the investor would constantly tell me that our business performance is poor which caused me much stress. It led me to see the parents as a source of money, constantly persuading them to send their children here to study.” – Crystal

Quickly, Crystal realised that she violated her own and Yelaoshr’s professional standards. She reflected her opinions to the investor, noting that they should not blindly use sales to evaluate the performance of the centre because this concept will change Yelaoshr’s education beliefs.

“I believe that being loyal and true to the first purpose we establish Yelaoshr and to the attitude of education, the parents will feel the difference because only with the right attitude will more students enrol.” – Crystal

To Crystal, the most challenging aspect of expanding Yelaoshr was not teaching, and not encountering the parents; but it is to find the teacher with a heart for children and is willing to teach them.

“Teachers with both qualities are few in number.” – Crystal

Every so often, whenever Crystal realised that some teachers only bring in an attitude of a worker or when teaching gets tough and tiring, Crystal will always discuss with them regarding their career prospects and direction.

“I personally think that if you truly have the heart to teach a child, you will not feel exhausted. If you feel exhausted, perhaps the methods you used are incorrect or your attitude and personality do not suit the job.” – Crystal

In that way, Crystal feels it is better for both parties because there is no need to force the stay of teachers, making them tired as she herself also feels tired when seeing situations as such.

“If you do not suit the job, just let go! There is no wrong in it.” – Crystal

Barely approaching her 30s, Crystal is very satisfied with her current situation.

“I have family members who are very supportive and they shifted from one place to another a few times just for me. My four centres only require a highway to commute which makes it convenient. This year-end or early next year, Yelaoshr will be expanding to Putra Heights and I look forward to the future.” – Crystal

Bringing forth a childlike heart to help children with a passion and to solve the frustrations of parents are the secret keys to Crystal success. These stories may sound like nothing but they are the stories that inspire Crystal’s soul; they are the motivations that keep expanding the Yelaoshr franchise. She only has one goal – that is more people will benefit from Yelaoshr.

#03 Children are also searching for “true love”

As parents, we would pay special attention to our children’s big and small issues. Especially after establishing the Yelaoshr Learning Centre, sometimes hearing the educational methods of some parents to their children, my heart felt pride. Everyone, please lend me some time and listen to what I’ve got to say!

The most frequent thing I have heard is that parents are disappointed and furious because the studies of their children are not as expected. Some would even go as far to say, “I’ve spent so much money, sacrificed my time to fetch you and you’ve repaid me with this kind of results!” Similarly, if their children produce good results, parents would reward their children, showing that they love them even more. Between parents and the children, this situation where results are used in exchange for love has indirectly caused harm to the children.

用心教学 叶老师 teacher yap

I believed that not one child does not want to excel in their studies. Many times, they do not even know what problems they are facing in the process of studying. “Why can’t I understand even if I’ve studied it back and forth? Why does the teacher give me so many exercises, but I still cannot understand what it is about?” Before the challenges faced are even resolved, the children already hear their parents’ scolding. Now, the children will receive a message – it is my fault, I am not good enough, and sink into a perception that they are stupid and useless. What a depressing phenomenon this is! Only with excellent results, then I am accountable to my parents, then my parents will love me… is this truly “love”?

Nowadays, capitalism is the way of the norm, many parents are both working in the society, and have also accepted rules in the business society; that is, how much you deserve depends on how much effort you have put in. At some of the Yelaoshr Learning Centres, I have heard parents calculating, “In this course, how many words can you let my child learn? RM400 can learn 800 words, meaning one word costs 50 cents?” If the amount of money is paid and the child does not learn the fixed amount of words, it seems as if Yelaoshr is a scam!

In truth, there are many factors that affect a child’s results. In addition to their own qualifications, they also require time, encouragement and support from others, the physical and mental state of the child on the exam day etc. This is not a business, but an education. We cannot use the standards of business to fit on a child.

葉老師 創意教學

Another thing I have frequently heard is, “I know that your courses are great, but I think my child cannot do it.” They said that they have watched the videos posted on our website and are confident in our teaching methods, but they are just not confident in their children. Frustratingly they totally do not believe that their children have potential, simply saying that “My child is a slow learner, very hard to be taught.” Even if children have an opportunity to learn, they still carry a doubtful attitude, feeling that their children cannot succeed.

I always tell my fellow teachers that we have to continuously do what we do to prove to the parents that their children can do it. This is truly the biggest wish and motivation of Yelaoshr’s teachers. We may recruit children of larger ages and they may have some temper and attitude in the beginning and teaching them can be tedious and tiring at times. Nevertheless, when we are able to teach team, allowing their parents to change their opinions, the effort and time we have put in are worth it. In schools, you may probably hear of the teachers complaining about your child, saying that they are not focused, or not completing their homework etc;at Yelaoshr, we will tell you – your child can do it!

To help a child’s studies is not by filling up more tuition classes, but to first know a child’s level and to teach in accordance with their ability.

There is a saying that goes, raise a child for 100 years, worry 99 of it. However, parents similarly also have stress and emotions. No matter how much you keep holding on, there will be much needed time to rest and relax. This article is for parents who relentlessly work hard to raise their children. Open up your heart to read Sg. Chua’s Yelaoshr Learning Centre’s business partner cum person-in-charge – Wendy’s story.

The first is about a mother of a seven-year old girl; a story about being in extreme stress when her child goes for exams.

Wendy revealed this mother is a working adult who comes home rather late from work. Due to her job, she can hardly find the time to revise with her daughter and because of this gets very worried about her daughter’s exam results. During a recent mid-term test, she confessed to Wendy that she does not have enough time to revise all of the chapters with her daughter, causing her to worry. This mother regards Wendy as a true friend, so they chatted via messages till 11pm late at night. Wendy does not see it as a trouble.

yelaoshr teacher yap sg chua wendy

“I usually treat the parents like my friends. Additionally, my daughter is also the same age as hers and they are both going through this mid-term exam. Hence she would tell me about these things as I understood how she felt.” – Wendy

Honest to speak, Wendy feels that this mother’s daughter does quite well in her exams. It is just that sometimes she will make some careless mistakes when answering the questions. Wendy comforted her; telling her that her daughter is doing better than average, and tried to convey a message on the attitude a parent should have.

“Exams are a part of a child’s learning process and the results are not important.” – Wendy

Wendy says, just like adults, there is no book that teaches us how to become mothers or teachers, we learn step by step. It is the same for exams. Children have to experience a few exams and they will begin to grasp a few exam answering techniques such as after finished answering they should recheck etc. Wendy also points out an important aspect, which is the parents’ emotion.

teacher yap YelaoShr wendy tiew

“If parents show that they are overly nervous during their children’s exam period, children will indirectly feel that exams are very frightening, thus causing them to be stress. We should learn to let go in order for our children to grow. It is still something I have mentioned – the results are not everything.” – Wendy

After advice from Wendy, the mother was calmer. When her daughter’s results were revealed, indeed her child did well and the best subject – Bahasa Malaysia even got a 99.5%! There is still room for improvement due to careless mistakes, but after learning a lesson, she will definitely become better!

To fully understand children’s learning progression is one of the ways to supervise their studies. The other option is to encourage and trust in your child. This is another story Wendy wants to share with you.

December last year, a parent brought her seven-year-old to Wendy’s centre. After some tests, the child was determined to only have a five-year-old level in Bahasa Malaysia and a six-year-old level in Chinese. The learning centre was on holidays at the end of the year, so the child only started his classes in January the following year. Wendy said that the parent was very worried and helpless. For one, she knows her child’s language proficiency is not at par; secondly, she does not want to send her child for tuition at a young age of seven. Wendy then comforted the parent, telling her that Yelaoshr is different from tuition centres. We will let children learn in happiness, boosting their interest in reading and to build their foundation as a forefront direction.

teacher yap 三语认字阅读

After listening to Wendy’s explanation about Yelaoshr’s teaching methods and concepts, she agreed and is assured to let her child learn at Yelaoshr. To build up and strengthen language foundation requires time and it the results cannot be reaped in a short time. The parent was not anxious in her child improving at top speed because she trusts Yelaoshr, but she trusts her child even more. After half a year of guidance, on the open day of Yelaoshr, Wendy reported the learning progress of her child and this parent gave lots of assurance and said that her child has learnt many words now and it very positive in wanting to learn more.

“In the past, she has bought a lot of reference books for her child but would never want to read them; now, the child would take the initiative to ask for reference books and exercises.” – Wendy

Currently, the child has progressed from suku kata to words in Yelaoshr’s Bahasa Malaysia class while in the Chinese language, he has completed the primary 1 syllabus and is moving forward to the primary 2 phase.

Wendy says that she understands that parents may be anxious about seeing the growth and improvement of their children and this is very normal. However, do not be frustrated; we need to have a positive and healthy attitude and method to guide the children and not be overly anxious which will affect the passion of a child towards learning. She also points out that some parent will blindly send their children to different tuition centres, filling up all the time. If a child has a weak foundation, tuition will not help.

“We need to find the root of the problem, accept it and solve it.” – Wendy

Identifying children’s unique talent – and light them up

“My results are not as good since schooling days; I am worried that if I joined Yelaoshr as a teacher I may lead children down the wrong path….” Did you ever have such concerns? Then you would have to listen to Penny’s story.

Penny is the joint partner of Seremban’s Yelaoshr and she has taught in Alam Damai and Semenyih branches. Prior to joining Yelaoshr, she had an immense interest towards bakery and worked in the baking industry for over three years.

“During my secondary school years, my results were not remarkable. I felt that I was interested in arts and craft and technical skills, hence I made my decision to become a baker in the future.” – Penny

Upon completing her SPM, Penny worked for a year to earn some savings and then enrolled in The Chef Academy’s Professional Bakery Course to have professional qualifications in this sector. Once she obtained her certificate, Penny devoted herself to the bakery business. In the beginning, she learnt many things and gained loads of experience and skills from a Japanese bakery master. With more than three years of honing and refining of skills enabled her to master the art of all kinds of bread and cakes.

An accident with her right hand left her injured leaving her unable to step into the bakery industry again.

“The doctor advised me to stop my work so that I would not aggravate my injury.” – Penny

Feeling lost and confused, Penny had to face the harsh reality of unemployment because her only qualification can never bring her any income again.

Teacher Yap Vacancy

Some moments later, Penny’s brother saw a recruitment advertisement by Yelaoshr on the internet. He knew that Penny loves children thus encouraging her to apply. Penny’s first thoughts were that her results were not good enough and she would not want to lead children astray. Her brother encouraged her to just give it a try and not to stop in her tracks before she even started.

“When I went to apply for a job, the interviewer did not ask me about my educational background but is more focused on if a teacher has love and a diligent heart to learn. This made me felt relieved.” – Penny

Penny started off training at a learning centre near Alam Damai and also worked at the Semenyih branch sometime later. After five years of work, Penny became a partner of the Yelaoshr franchise and opened a Yelaoshr Learning Centre in Seremban. She began to handle the administrative work at the centre and sometimes even meet up with parents to offer consultation services.

“Some people may feel that children are very naughty and mischievous, but to me, they are like angels. I felt that it’s worth it even though it is tiring while teaching them.” – Penny

Identifying children’s unique talent – and light them up

Through the teaching process, Penny once taught a primary 6 dyslexic student. The one thing that both Penny and the student have in common is that they did not really excel in studies but have other talents – making origamis and assembling models.

“The foundation of this student is rather weak, hence he only attends classes of the primary 1 level at Yelaoshr just to enable him to recognise more words and to strengthen his foundation.” – Penny

Penny noted that when this student started coming for classes, he was always in a frightened state and did not want to mix with anyone else.

“He comes to the centre five days per week. At first, he was always quietly doing his homework and does not talk at all.” – Penny

Penny then decided to let go of her status as a teacher and chat with him freely as a child (This primary 6 boy is already taller than Penny). Because he was always in a situation where he felt pressurised in school, by coming to Yelaoshr we hope to give him a break.

Penny realised that actually, his studies are not as bad as she thinks. It is just that when he encounters words that are more difficult he tends to resist learning.

“At moments like this, we would sometimes let him rest and play some other activities he likes.” – Penny

While resting and playing, Penny realised his interest and talent in origami and model assembling and these are the hobbies that are channels of his relaxation. We tried to unintentionally show him flash cards while he is playing to let him learn in a less stressful environment whereas not just by sitting quietly in front of a teacher to learn in class.

“Sometimes he would tell us teachers that he is useless and I would encourage him by saying: Look, you can make origamis and assemble Lego blocks very well, some of them we teachers can’t even do it; you are excellent!” – Penny

Teacher Yap YelaoShr Seremban

Half a year later during Teacher’s Day, this student suddenly said he wanted to gift Penny – “I want to gift you my results.” Penny revealed that before studying at Yelaoshr, he failed all his subjects; but today, he passed many of his subjects, even with a C in mathematics. This shocked Penny, and she felt comforted.

Penny wondered in thoughts, “Every child can be taught well, even dyslexic children are not excluded. As long as the right methods are used, children still can have the ability to absorb new information.”

Besides noticing the children’s improvement in studies, their confidence is boosted even in the smallest things in everyday life. Looking back five years at her lost self, today she can participate in the administrative work of the centre, communicate with confidence with parents and teach the children. This joy in her growth is priceless.

“Through all these years, I think that it does not necessarily require a person with higher education level to do something you love. There are a lot of things which requires us to start from zero and learn one step at a time. With that, when faced with challenges, even if you are afraid or that you do not know how, you have to grasp the opportunity to try. You will not succeed if you do not try.” – Penny

#02 A children-centred education system, increasing learning effectiveness; moreover, providing an opportunity for children to be themselves.

What if I tell you that my ideal education system is a teaching method that is totally different from the existing educational system? Will you be willing to give it a listen? Will you be able to accept it? Come and listen, there’s no harm to it. Take it as that you are listening to me telling you my dreams and aspirations.

It is a children-centred education system.

The educational system that we are familiar with is a teacher-centred system. Teachers will get to decide what subjects a child needs to study and how many chapters to read. The textbooks outline sets that each year there will be 10 chapters. Within a year, whether students are smart or less intellectual, they all need to finish learning these 10 chapters. We would need to ask now, if some students are unable to catch up throughout the learning process, or that some subjects are not fully understood, what will the results be? The child brings in doubts that were not answered in time and move on to the next level and study subjects will increasing difficulty, accumulating more of the “I don’t understand”.

Yet in this children-centred education system, there will be none of these rigid frames. What a child learns will depend on his/her learning capability. If a child is able to learn rapidly, he/she will be able to cover 12-13 chapters in a year; for a child who is slow at learning, he/she may only be able to understand 3 chapters in a year. The core value is: children truly understand what they have learnt. In reality, USA and New Zealand are countries that are starting to implement this kind of education system in schools. The course outline is arranged according to the capability of a child. For example, an 8-year old child takes a proficiency test before the school year starts and he can complete mathematics of a 12-year old level but can only understand English of a 6-year old. When he studies in school, he will attend the 12-year old mathematics class and the 6-year old English lessons thus learning together with children of different ages.

teacher yap 叶老师 1 对 1 教

Let’s zoom in a little; in fact, isn’t it true that we can see there are foreign language learning centres also followed this system to allocate students to different classes? From these, we can observe that this educational system is workable.

Why is there the appearance of such an education system? First and foremost, we need to think about the initial purpose of learning.

Learning is a process for us to grasp new knowledge and skills. If I have yet to understand the basics and because of my growing age requires me to climb up to classes with increasing difficulty, is it still considered learning? The only way is to follow our children’s footsteps, guiding and teaching them one step at a time which shows the true meaning of learning and to allow children to develop their potential. YelaoShr is founded on this “to build a strong foundation in learning” concept and kick-started with trilingual literacy classes to commence from the most basic parts. Because we know that with enough reading and recognising more words can at least decrease half of the problems faced in studies.

Moving forward, we will talk about this rigid frame that parents set on children.

I remember when I established YelaoShr 13 years ago, I arranged for a weaker 8-year old child in Bahasa Malaysia to start with the basics of suku kata. I have parents hesitantly asked, “Is this really okay?” Why not? Since his fundamentals are weak, then we should work on getting his fundamentals right, only can he progress to higher levels. It is easy to understand this concept but at that moment, we are all held back by the rigid frame of the norm.

I would like to share the education methods I arranged for the children. In the 6 years of primary school, I would let the child excel in the Chinese language whereas the remaining subjects he is only required to pass and hand in the homework given during primary 1. Throughout the one year, his Chinese would have improved to the level of a primary 2 or 3, Chinese classes in the future would allow the child to have full confidence. Next, in primary 2, I would let him do his best in Bahasa Malaysia. The list goes on and on. Parents nowadays are very anxious, hoping that their children will do exceptionally well in all subjects, causing them to send their children for tuition for every subject. At the end, when all subjects are not handled well, the children are stressed, and the parents would feel the same. Based on what I have shared earlier, even if children are not as good in some subjects, parents are not to worry because you will know that everything is in control and naturally you can be relieved of the worries in your heart.

Honestly, a children-centred education system is more suitable for the world. The education system now fixes everyone under the same standards, causing people to be unable to unleash their potential. Even after graduation and stepping into the workforce, there is also a fixed system to follow. This method is perhaps very useful during the industrial revolution of the past as authorities want the people to just follow instructions, to not think and to work diligently. The world is changing and revolving, and everyone has the power to make their own decisions and should be entitled to their own thoughts. If this old people-oriented education system implemented from the top to the bottom, I believe the future world will be a better place because everyone is doing something they love.

In this aspect, YelaoShr is taking one step at a time to hope to influence the teachers and parents around slowly. We believe this is possible. Let us return this opportunity for children to be themselves.

Education, born out of love. Educate our children and the children around us well

Another YelaoShr Learning Centre is opening soon! This time we are bringing good news to Kuching, East Malaysia and classes will commence starting August!

Doris, the director of Kuching’s YelaoShr, was born here, raised here and decided to build her business near her home. She had experience as an auditor for six years and an accountant for a year, and numbers are a part of her everyday life. Through the many years of work, Doris also has children of her own, and started to realise the importance of early childhood education which is totally a new world.

“When my child is 3-4 years old, I felt that I should ensure that his foundation in language is built strong, hence I began searching online for relevant courses. It is at this moment I found YelaoShr, browsing through the information made me wanted to send my child there for classes. I noticed that they offer an opportunity to join ventures and started to think further and thought of the possibilities of entrepreneurship.” – Doris

By the end of last year, Doris handed in her online application form to join venture in YelaoShr. As she received a reply, she had to fly over to West Malaysia to undergo a series of training. Doris did not think too much about it and agreed even though it was a big and important decision.

“It was because I saw some teaching videos on the YelaoShr social media platform, and the children really improved in such a short span of time. This just further strengthens my trust in YelaoShr. After training participation and being an assistant teacher, I was even more convinced that YelaoShr’s teaching methods were effective.” – Doris

Doris believes that children of this generation are very smart and bright. Hence there are no unteachable children, but it all likes in the key of creative learning to induce the interest in learning. This is where YelaoShr excel, and this is YelaoShr’s strength.

In the business world where numbers are everywhere, press on the calculator; calculate the accounts and you can clearly see the answers and results. However, in the education sector, even if one has a set of teaching techniques, there will still be times some children are not suitable for it and teaching requires individualisation. To Doris, even though it is a huge
change in the working environment, but she did not quit because of this. Instead, she come to love her new job, because she enjoys seeing children grow and improve through the process of learning at YelaoShr.

“In addition to improvising, this line of work needs a lot of love and patience. While training, the tutors fully display this aspect.” – Doris

Doris realises children born in the digital era did not recognise enough words, causing them to lack in understanding while reading books.

#01 Step out of the school, open up your horizons, fill your life with wonderful surprises

美国加州培德中学舞狮团

In the Genting World Lion Dance Championship this year, the Pei De Secondary School Lion Dance Club California, USA was awarded the title of “Western Lion King”. This school was also the school my three children attended, and it was an immense honour.

The Genting World Lion Dance Championship would award both titles “Eastern Lion King” and “Western Lion King” and also the final champion where the east and west meet to battle for the “Genting World Lion King”. Though both the eastern and western teams compete according to the country they represent but the western team are also filled with Chinese ethnic participants. This time the Pei De Secondary School Lion Dance Club California, USA comprised of two Americans, a Singaporean, a Taiwanese, a Chinese and three Malaysians, and for the first time in this competition the Americans are criticising the qualifications of the “Western Lion King” award.

云顶世界狮王争霸赛

This lion dance team saw the stage with the appearance of Caucasian children and he is only 16 years old. The results that they obtained in the competition excelled other western professional lion dance teams (USA, Australia, France etc.). Their performance filled with youthful energy while maintaining innocence displayed the spirit of “the young are fearless” which made me felt very touched.

Establishing YelaoShr 10 over years, I ultimately believe that each child has limitless potential. There are no unteachable children. As long as the right learning methods are discovered, a child can be stimulated to success. These children gave in their all while other children are having fun in their summer holidays. They practised hard for those tricky, difficult and high-risk lion dance actions. Pile jumping has its risks; at the beginning of the championship, three groups were unable to participate as some of their team members got injured while practice and six groups of athletes were injured while pile jumping in the competition. One of the Taiwanese athletes was even hurt badly! Nevertheless, overcoming their psychological barriers fearlessly and boldly challenging themselves with perseverance, they are finally able to taste the sweetness of success.

This rare opportunity and experience will be something they enjoy for the rest of their lives. Experiences as such are not obtained from textbooks. To step out of the school and participate in co-curricular activities can open up children’s horizons, and leave a lasting surprise in their lives.

Congratulations to the Pei De Secondary School Lion Dance Club California, USA! You have inspired millions of young souls; displaying your most passionate and most inspirational spirit! Well done!

A decade to grind a sword; it takes time to implement a different education concept

15th of July, a YelaoShr Learning Centre opened its doors in Bukit Raja, Klang Valley. What’s worth noting is that the entrepreneur, Peggy only joined YelaoShr and accepted training to become an educator on the 1st of June. YelaoShr implements a strict reviewing process towards teachers and prospect partners alike. To open up a centre usually take approximately 6 months to a year’s time of preparation. In such a short time span of one month, how did Peggy achieve this success?

“Prior to joining YelaoShr, I was already in the education industry for 10 years.” – Peggy presents a critical factor in her review. With such experience in the education sector, this enabled Peggy to be able to pick up tips and tricks easily while undergoing training.

Peggy was originally a computer teacher, facing a bottleneck situation in her job after 10 years and she could not find a breakthrough. “I chatted with a friend who works at YelaoShr dealing with the development of new markets, he introduced me to YelaoShr.” – Peggy

Peggy heard about YelaoShr’s ventures and her entrepreneurship dreams were rekindled. After 6 months of leaving her job, she began to train at YelaoShr. Another reason that enabled her to quickly accept YelaoShr was the correspondence of teaching concepts, and that her teaching yields marvellous results.

“YelaoShr is different from other courses and classes. It provides a unique method to allow children to learn words and pronunciations rapidly.” – Peggy

During her period of internship, Peggy was attached to one of the centres. As she starts to implement these methods to teach the children, her confidence grew when the children benefit from her teaching.
“There are many children in the learning centre which do not recognise Chinese words, have different levels and abilities in learning. YelaoShr educates us to teach in accordance to the children’s talents, to individualise teaching techniques with children of different learning capabilities. The results of my internship – these methods really work!” – Peggy

While training, there was a message that left a deep impression on Peggy. “What we do with education is to spread love to everyone.” Besides individualised teaching, YelaoShr wants teachers to treat every student equally. No matter good or bad in studies, teachers are to educate with all their heart and strength.

Serving the community back at home

Peggy, who is from Klang Valley, established her YelaoShr Learning Centre at the place she grew up in. This is her way of giving back to the community. When asked if she wants to venture into the business, Peggy did not hesitate for a second and she hopes to help more children learn and know more words.
She expresses that children nowadays face electronic gadgets for long hours which lead to the lack of enthusiasm in books and reading and literacy is starting to become weak.

“YelaoShr focuses on teaching children to learn words and pronunciations; reading is a method I totally agree on. If literacy among children is increased, their confidence will increase too and in the process instilled a love for reading. In that way, children will naturally have improvements in their homework and exams.” – Peggy

Currently, the newly founded learning centre has an assistant teacher working with Peggy. Peggy feels blessed because YelaoShr is well-known. In addition to receiving great reviews, a lot of parents also know about YelaoShr’s concepts and trust in YelaoShr fully. She does not need to explain much as most parents are very clear with the methods used at YelaoShr. This saved quite a hassle to her who just started her own centre and she is very positive with the future prospects.

Teacher Yap: The establishment of the education sector requires a firm purpose. It is not a business waiting for customers to come in to buy and spend; it is a space to life influence lives.
