Parents’ full trust is the strength that drives teachers to teach wholeheartedly.

In the working environment at Yelaoshr, it does not matter if you are the person-in-charge or a teacher, everyone works in a delightful vibe. Employers and employees work together and help each other. Lui worked at the Bandar Kinrara Yelaoshr branch for approximately a year and a half. Today, she is the person-in-charge for the learning centre. As you can see, Yelaoshr offers many opportunities for teachers to learn.

Lui has been in the education industry for about eight years. Before, she had been working at kindergartens, childcare and tuition classes etc. These experiences are enough to prove her ability in teaching and she clearly sees the unique point of Yelaoshr.

Lui has been in the education industry for about eight years. Before, she had been working at kindergartens, childcare and tuition classes etc. These experiences are enough to prove her ability in teaching and she clearly sees the unique point of Yelaoshr.

Lui originally opened a kindergarten with her business partner. However, she quitted due to communication and health problems. At this point of time, she heard from her students, parents and primary school friends alike unanimously recommended Yelaoshr to her while being unemployed.

She said, “Prior to this, I only know that Yelaoshr uses flash cards in their teaching and nothing else. However, all of them said that Yelaoshr is great and with their recommendations, I came forward for an interview.”

When she first joined the team, Lui was already happy with her job at Yelaoshr.

“The person-in-charge was recognised my abilities and within a month I was already tasked with meeting the parents. this made me felt that she really taught me unconditionally.” – Lui

In less than a year, Lui promoted to become the centre’s supervisor. Lui had once doubted if she can handle it but words from her boss made sense to her, which was, “You can learn and apply at the same time, I will not wait for you to know everything to let you handle it.” For this trust, Lui is utterly grateful.

From right-hand side :Lui’s  supervisor —— Ms Yan.

Besides being highly favoured by her boss, Lui stated that the workload at Yelaoshr is not as heavy as other education centres.

“Here, I do not need to prepare for classes as the materials are fully prepared and facilities equipped. I only need to read through once 10 minutes before classes commence.” – Lui

Even though Yelaoshr implements a one-to-one learning system, after Lui promoted to being supervisor, she trains her teachers, shared materials for half an hour before work began every single day. At the weekly meeting, she allows teachers to share their experiences, challenges and problems faced in the process of teaching.

“I believe that through activities like these, our teachers can be united and improve through learning from each other. I may be a supervisor but I do not see myself better than others because my fellow teachers and I are working together to serve the next generation.” – Lui

Parents’ trust is like a powerful fortress.

“Previously, children are very afraid of me as I am very strict.” – Lui

Lui laughed it off as sometimes she was too nervous about the children’s learning progress and may have scolded the children. Since the parents have placed their children in their care, Lui felt that she has the obligation to teach them well. However, Lui started to hear some parents say that a few children do not like to attend Yelaoshr. She quickly reflected upon herself, should she adjust her teaching methods? She came to realise that trust should be built in her relationship with the children. Using encouraging methods not only can it bring the children’s heart closer to hers, but it can also motivate them to learn more. Hence, she changed her teaching style so that children will be more teachable.

Lui Teacher Yap Bandar Kinrara

Lui obtained a sense of achievement with Yelaoshr. In addition to seeing the children improve, she also gained the trust of the parents.

“There was a six-year-old, and when he came in he could not even pronounce suku kata. His parents sent him here with a mentality to just give a shot to see if he can improve. At the end, when the child was also to slowly read out words at home, his mother thanked profusely.” – Lui

There is still something more behind this story. This child initially did not like Lui to teach him but his parents say that they should not accommodate their child to change another teacher and insisted that Lui teach their son. This made Lui felt warmth because this is the greatest support to her from parents.

There is another seven-year-old girl who was also ‘picky’ about the teachers when she attended classes. Lui reminisced that this girl is more emotional. She will throw a tantrum when she meets a teacher she does not like. Luckily when I reflected this situation to her parents, they are both very reasonable and let us teach according to our methods, not allowing her to choose whichever teacher she wants. When encountered with children who are not very cooperative, on top of their poor language foundation, teachers need to be even more patient so that they can accept the teachers and learn.

Lui said, “Initially, she was resistant towards the Malay language. She could only read out two sounds made of suku kata and was unable to do more than that. She got a 70 mark in her Bahasa Malaysia later, something that her family never think of and slowly but surely she started to love the language.”

The children’s improvement resulted in the parents’ faith in Yelaoshr, complimenting Yelaoshr as a good learning ground.

Teacher Yap Teacher Yap Bandar Kinrara Lui Bandar Kinrara

To Lui, children are just like small tiny seedlings. Teachers are responsible to take care of these seedlings and not ruin their great future.

“Meeting parents and recruiting students should not be done based on income and sales but it is to put in every effort to teach every child that comes. With this sort of attitude at work, it made me indefinitely happy.” – Lui

A gorgeous makeover: From homemakers to educators, accepting the inner calling.

Perhaps joining Yelaoshr as a teacher may have many different reasons for different individuals, but for Cass’s story, it is rather interesting. When interviewed, she said, “I joined because I was bored!”

Cass is a mother of three. Prior to joining Yelaoshr she was a full-time housewife. The Cass three years ago frequently visited a vegetarian restaurant. Because Yelaoshr’s learning centre is just right above the restaurant, she often saw information about Yelaoshr.

“Three years ago, my youngest was five or six years old and the eldest already 12. At this period of time, my children were in kindergarten and primary school and I realised I have some free time in my daily routine.” – Cass

Despite noticing the recruitment advertisement by Yelaoshr, but for some reasons Cass was unable to take the first step forward.

“After giving birth to my firstborn, I had resigned my advertising job, so I have not been in the workforce for about 11 to 12 years and was worried I am unable to cope and adapt. In addition, the job as a ‘teacher’ feels as if it required many skills and I was not sure if I could take up the job.” – Cass

After much consideration, with feelings in her, that said, “I’ll give it a try!”, Cass went for an interview for the post of a part-time assistant teacher at the Puchong Yelaoshr. She works three mornings per week to accommodate the time to fetch her children from school. This arrangement did not cause her to neglect her family and even find a support to her free time which was rather a win-win deal. Seven to eight months later, Cass was asked by her boss if she can work as a full-time teacher when the learning centre was short of manpower.

“At that moment I clarified to my boss that ‘family’ is still the centre of my focus.” – Cass

Cass may have agreed to work full-time but she acquired approval from her boss to allow her children to stay at the Yelaoshr learning centre after school. As she lives nearby the centre, Cass was able to go home and cook, have dinner and come back to work later. Cass said that verbally she may have said she will focus more on her family but she still treats and teaches the children at the centre earnestly because this is the fundamental responsibility of a teacher.

Without realising it, Cass has adapted to her life as a full-time teacher. A couple of months later, her boss started to allow her to meet parents and also train other teachers, slowly building up her road leading to entrepreneurship. Most importantly, these experiences had built up her faith in growing a business.

“In addition to managing more of the administrative work, I became friends with Bao Yi at the learning centre, who is my business partner at the Tmn Kinrara branch. I feel that our personalities and the way we handle things are similar. This one to two years we had been working closely with each other and she is one of the reasons I can build my business so smoothly.” – Cass

Indeed, Cass has transformed from a housewife to a part-time assistant teacher to a full-time teacher and to now, a Yelaoshr business partner.

Earnestly helping parents and children

Prior to Cass joining Yelaoshr, she was not in the education sector. However, diligence is the key to success! She let on that she would read materials related to education every day to improve herself. Hence, when encountering parents and children alike, she has no problem communicating with them. She concludes her secret when it comes to dealing with people – being earnest.

“Besides wanting parents to successfully enrol their children, I hoped, even more, to help the children grow and learn. Sometimes when I talked to parents, I would suggest some other channels apart from Yelaoshr to help their children, especially those children who are special.” – Cass

She continued, many bad habits that parents see in their children are actually symptoms of them being special which required professional knowledge and much experience to realise. Hence, when reminding the parents, they really got a shock.

“Some children may be stagnant for a period once they reach a certain level and they could not learn properly. I would discuss and reflect with their parents regarding the suitability of continuing to learn in this environment. Perhaps the children needed medical attention before continuing their classes here.” – Cass

Due to Cass’s children have similar situations, she knows better on how to handle this kind of condition. She would provide suggestions on ways to take care of special needs children and regarding their children’s diet to improve the children’s situation.

“I am also a parent, hence, I tend to have a mutual effect with the parents. Some parents had even cried in front of me while chatting. They could be very grateful for the help, or just do not know what to do.” – Cass

Yelaoshr Teacher Yap Taman Kinrara Cass

With an earnest heart, Cass would always put in her best effort to help the parents and children. Using Cass’s words, “this is to help people, to help myself”. Because this is a job she is passionate about, it gave even more meaning and value to her life.

Choose what you love, love what you choose; from just a job to a career.

“Many family members and friends would ask me, why do I want to become a teacher? Why do I want to become a Yelaoshr teacher?” These are the questions faced by Taman Kinrara’s Yelaoshr business partner Lee Bao Yi from her relatives.

Bao Yi is 23 years old. Originally a sales assistant due to being unhappy with her work searched online for a job and came across Yelaoshr. “During my secondary school and university years, I had worked as a tuition teacher and an assistant teacher in a kindergarten. Those were happy days because the children are very cute.” – Bao Yi

Carrying this positive feeling, the Yelaoshr recruitment advertisement naturally sparked her interest and she came forth for an interview.

yelaoshr teacheryap 宝仪 taman kinrara

“The one-to-one teaching method intrigued me. Upon joining Yelaoshr, it made me realised that Yelaoshr is totally different from any other tuition centres.” – Bao Yi

She also said that children nowadays be it at school or tuition centres lack the care from teachers. This one-to-one teaching method can educate children according to their progress and can even care for the children’s learning circumstances and attitudes.

Prior to branching out at Taman Kinrara, Bao Yi was one of the teachers at the Bdr. Puteri Yelaoshr learning centre. She shared that at the centre they accepted a few children who have dyslexia and language disability. Perhaps it was Bao Yi’s gentleness and her patience in teaching, these children are assigned to her.

“They can also improve and they can learn. All you need is just a little gentleness, a little patience to teach them slowly and it will work.” – Bao Yi

She mentioned that the parents of these children do not expect them to improve but just to know and recognise some words and can do some reading. Bao Yi felt deeply connected to the parents’ feelings and told the parents, “Children can improve as long as you cooperate with us and give us some time.” These children indeed improved! It does not matter if they can read one or two words because this is enough to make their parents leap for joy!

“These experiences to me are of great satisfaction and it resulted in immense faith in the Yelaoshr teaching system.” – Bao Yi

yelaoshr teacheryap taman kinrara 宝仪-01

Bao Yi knows that despite the slow learning progress of these children, they are just like any other child and will get hurt.

“We will not let them feel that they are different from other children. Teachers will treat them equally and teach every student with the same heart.” – Bao Yi

Last year, the boss saw Bao Yi’s mature teaching in classes and suggested her to break a leg in entrepreneurship. Bao Yi thought to herself, since her boss believe that she has the ability to teacher children well and that the Bdr. Puteri learning centre has a lot of students so why not search for a new place to help other children? With a willingness to help people, Bao Yi took up the responsibility even though she is young. She opened up a Yelaoshr learning centre with fellow partner Cass.

From Left:Bao Yi、Yelaoshr’s Creator – Carol Yap、Cass

To be able to venture into business, Bao Yi is very grateful to Yelaoshr because she grew tremendously under this organization.

“My boss, Ms Kong previously gave me advice and reminders when managing parents and children. She said that my strength is that I am very patient to the children and the children liked me but at some times when facing the parents some words during communication are inappropriate because I was unable to get rid of the tone I used to speak with children. With this awareness, I adjusted myself and improved my weakness.” – Bao Yi

In addition, Bao Yi reflected that the trainings and courses provided by Yelaoshr are very effective in upgrading teachers’ standards.

“Through these courses, my emotional management, education concepts, management skills etc. has advanced forward. Thanks to Yelaoshr who arranged many great speakers for us, allowing me to grow!” – Bao  Yi

To be able to help children and to increase in individual growth; I believe this is Bao Yi’s answer to the questions thrown at her?

#07 To create a working environment that gives a sense of satisfaction for the teachers; a stage to continuously have personal breakthroughs

As always, the job of a “teacher” gives people the impression of a stable job, attractive income, many benefits and holidays. However, a job that seem so bountiful as such has seen the number of teachers drastically decreasing over the years, not only do less people apply to become a teacher, there are many of these teachers opting for early retirement. This situation is obviously seen in teachers in big cities. In addition to handling the trivial and complicated paperwork in school, they are also faced with parents who are highly educated and parents who easily file for complaints about many things.

Teaching at Yelaoshr, teachers can not only retrieve their honour, they can also plainly educate in addition to building up their lives and realising self-growth and transformation.

叶老师 培训 yelaoshr training

“Come home” often, teachers are not alone

Every year, Yealoshr’s internal management will have two major events – which is the Appreciation Dinner and Large-scale Training. These two programs are specially prepared for our teachers.

The Large-scale Training will be held at a hotel. Headquarters will call in all 59 branches of Yelaoshr teachers to “come home”. We will invite professional speakers to provide valuable training to our teachers. Teachers would feedback every time that their teaching skills have improved and this united the teachers. As for the Appreciation Dinner before every Chinese New Year, it is a time for teachers to gather and fellowship with food to get to know one another. All over Malaysia, teachers would normally focus and work hard in their own centres, but when it comes to events like these, teachers are like a family because everyone is doing the same thing. This feeling, a sense of belonging because they know they are not alone in the battlefield. Regardless of the different place they work in, the problems they faced with parents and students alike are very similar. Listening to teachers of different centres sharing their thoughts, sometimes it when reflected on their own problems, it somehow does not seem so big anymore.

yelaoshr training 叶老师 培训

For 10 over years, we have slowly set up the mechanisms for teachers’ training but we are not satisfied with this because there are so many areas and details needing improvement. To do things effectively, we cannot just look at it from the surface. Some rules that are set by headquarters may not be effective to those teachers who implement them in reality. When we received feedback, we will reflect and even cancel some of the unnecessary systems. Hence we focused on interactions between teachers and the sharing of cases. These sessions are like family meetings, honest yet warm at the same time.

Yelaoshr is the fortress for our teachers

To our teachers, I do not treat them as my workers. Just like the students at the learning centre, we look forward to our students’ growth, we are also positive of our teachers’ transformation. As long as the teachers are willing to sacrifice, in the Yelaoshr system, they are able to become all-rounded leaders in just a short time. I always tell my teachers, if you are willing to upgrade yourself, we have many opportunities to allow you to grow.

Initially when there’s only one Yelaoshr learning centre, I would always tell them, “If possible, let us not be teachers for life.” I would always ask my teachers to meet the parents, learn how to manage the centre and I would share everything to them without any reservations. A few years later our teachers will have the skills and abilities to open branches. They will change from my teachers to bosses. To achieve all these fully depends on their willingness to accept challenges and to break out of their comfort zone.

叶老师 培训 yelaoshr training 叶老师创办人 叶怡怡

Both teachers and children have potential, with the right methods, they can become a new person. Just do not look down on yourself! Just as how you want parents to believe in their children, so should you believe in yourself!

Honestly speaking, to build an education platform is very exhausting because in the society there is a lot of competition. If there is no systematic team and brand, working in the education system is not easy. In this Yelaoshr platform, these problems are handled by headquarters. Teachers are only required to have a passion to teach, meet the parents with a sincere heart and focus on managing the centre. Yelaoshr is the fortress, a backup for our teachers.

Reminiscing more than 10 years back, tuition teachers were like workers needed to follow every orders given and they cannot have their own stand. Whatever the parents want you to teach, teachers should just follow blindly. The bosses of tuition centres would ask teachers to respect the parents as they are the source of income while a tuition teacher’s responsibility is to satisfy the needs of the customers. In environments like these, Yelaoshr stood firm, telling parents that there is a time to study, rest and even play. Some parents would be dissatisfied with it. Yelaoshr would tell parents that their child’s standards are not at par with their age requiring the child to start from a lower grade. How many parents could accept that? Now, we have walked through more than 10 years and Yelaoshr has built its own reputation. As for the parents, they can start to accept our concepts and values.

As an educator, we should stand up for our profession; to focus on the children and not to just blindly satisfy the parents. With Yelaoshr’s support, teachers can make a stand.

叶老师 培训 yelaoshr training 葉老師

Many of our teachers became business partners after joining Yelaoshr and some had even conducted their learning centres for more than 10 years. When we talked about the past, teachers would look back and realised that they can build their own business and they can be independent. At Yelaoshr, there is an opportunity to find your own piece of blue sky.

I always felt that this platform is amazing. Most of us are not originally from the education sector right from the very start but we manage to press on till today. There is no rule that says “success takes 10 years”; there is no hierarchy as some teachers opened their centre at the age of 22. Without limitations, we can allow more miracles to unfold here and more beautiful moments to surface.

She sets a great example to those children who want to buck up their Chinese language.

22-year old Iza is a Yelaoshr tutor at the Kota Kemuning branch and she is the ONLY MALAY among the 200 Yelaoshr teachers all over Malaysia. In a community where chinese language is the main communicative language, Iza is like a rose among thorns.

Teacher Yap 叶老师 Iza 葉老師 认字阅读

Both of Iza’s parents are Malays but her parents sent her to a kindergarten that speaks chinese.

Iza smiled and said, “They heard my uncle saying that learning chinese will make it easier to find a job later. Among my siblings I am the only one that is able to speak chinese!”

5-year old Iza arrives in a world surrounded by chinese language, she remembered that the first month communicating was difficult, but after a few months, she slowly learned chinese and was able to communicate with the teachers and other students. Iza went on to learn chinese for six years in primary school, continuing her chinese syllabus included in the secondary school syllabus. Later on when she moved to a new place, she was transferred to another secondary school without any chinese lessons conducted and did not cross paths with the chinese language anymore. Nevertheless, Iza’s passion for chinese had never ceased.

Teacher Yap 叶老师 葉老師 认字阅读 Iza Kota Kemuning

“My mother seemed to know this fact and after I graduated from university, even though I took up civil engineering, she encouraged me to find some jobs related to the chinese language to enable me to come in contact with chinese again. Then, I came across Yelaoshr on the internet.” – Iza

Iza teaches Bahasa Malaysia and english in the centre. Even though she does not teach chinese, but to ensure that students can understand some meaning of the words, Iza will sometimes use chinese to explain and from that she learned and improved her chinese.

“Actually when I first joined Yelaoshr, I was rather afraid because of the people around me are Chinese, in addition that I had not used the language for some time. Now, half a year had passed, I think I adapted quite well.” – Iza

Perhaps, we are more shocked to learn that Iza knows the chinese language but to Iza, she was even more surprised that children who come to Yelaoshr, a lot of these chinese students do not know chinese.

“Parents and children alike would ask me why do you know chinese. They are curious about the fact that I understand chinese. However, at the same time I was equally curious why Chinese would rather speak in english rather than chinese, and that they do not know chinese?” – Iza

To Iza, everyone should love their own mother tongue. It is just like how every Malay speaks Bahasa Malaysia naturally. Hence during teaching, when she encountered Chinese students, Iza will first use chinese to communicate with them. If she realised that the child cannot speak in chinese, she will only then use other languages to communicate.

“When I first taught a child, he did not gave me any response even though I had been speaking to him for half a day. Later on I switched to english and finally he responded. I was really surprised that there are chinese children who actually do not speak chinese.” – Iza

Iza admits that her chinese level is not at the teaching level but she hopes that some day she is able to teach the chinese language.

“Now, I would use my free time to read chinese books. I also bought reference books for Chinese pinyin. If I face any doubts I’ll ask my colleagues.” – Iza

She also shared some verbs that she learned recently, which includes “experience”, “encourage” and “advise” etc..

I believe that Iza’s “special identity” will be able to set a great example to children who want to buck up their chinese language. To help children rekindle their interest in their mother tongue, Iza finds much happiness within it.

#06 Teachers, the engineers of the souls in society. The souls are also the mental development of children apart from knowledge.

Teachers are the engineers of the souls in society. The souls are also the mental development of children apart from knowledge. This is a sacred job. One step wrong and a child’s future will end at the hands of the teacher. Hence, working in this education industry, we do not forget the noble aspiration, and that is why I pay a lot of attention to Yelaoshr’s teaching quality.

Headquarters and teachers, a two-way communication

When I was designing the educational system, I knew that the time children spent at Yelaoshr are very limited. Therefore, our job is to grasp hold of every step in teaching in that limited amount of time so as to not waste any of this precious time. We will not let our teachers do additional things, and try to be accurate in the methods individualised to each child’s needs. If there are teachers giving feedback regarding some materials or courses being ineffective, we will modify and amend it to be near perfection.

The ultimate purpose of Yelaoshr is to teach children to understand and not to finish the syllabus on hand. We do not want to see children understand superficially where after months and months, they did not learn anything. If teachers find that progress is slow, they need to adapt and modify their teaching methods. Of course, based on our experience, 80 per cent of the children are able to follow the lessons in our courses partly because we have been in the industry for years. Those 20 per cent are children that are extraordinary and require extraordinary attention in teaching. Extraordinary meant special need children, slow learners, children with a more stubborn personality etc. The direction of our training for teachers existed for this purpose.

叶老师 培训 teacher yap

A perfect system, quality assured.

As our franchise expanded in numbers, I am leaning heavily towards the part of training and coaching our teachers. The number of teachers is increasing steadily and slowly, I am unable to guide each and every teacher. The efforts we have put in over the years have made our training module near perfect. We want to focus on the teaching methods and the building up of the mental aspect of our training. Once the techniques and methods are mastered, we can present these techniques wholly in our classes to the children. If we encounter extraordinary children, we need to have great wisdom, immense patience and love to utilise another way to teach them.

Yelaoshr teachers will participate in training at the headquarters or at the centres they work in. Before being able to participate in teaching, teachers will be guided by the supervisor of the branches and they will need to be evaluated and validated at the headquarters later.  If a teacher can fully understand and accept our teaching concepts, then she is able to answer all questions. However, if they do not pass the validation process, supervisors will subsequently assist and follow up. Teachers at other centres will also be audited for the quality in teaching as headquarters will send auditors to check on teaching records and observe the situations during classes.

完善培训机制 叶老师

To recognise our teachers’ hard work, we will issue a Certificate of Completion to those who can fully master certain subjects. If a teacher can excel in a subject through results and progress, or to reach a level of expertise, we will issue a Certificate of Achievement and some monetary rewards.

Yelaoshr has established for 13 years and till today, we have 55 centres all over Malaysia. All the branches’ are through joint ventures which means the entrepreneurs are mostly teachers who served in Yelaoshr prior to this. They are evaluated for their attitude and teaching concepts by headquarters before being authorised to open their own Yelaoshr Learning Centre.

We pray that the Yelaoshr franchise can move forward one step at a time to the ambition of being ‘engineers of the soul’; to allow children to learn happily and fall in love with learning from the world that is full of knowledge and information. This is what children of this generation needs, and it is also my heart’s desire to see this wonderful picture.

To manage a learning centre, students hope to meet good teachers; the teachers also hope to meet good leaders, she wholeheartedly plays her role.

Life is like a game. Turning points in life come unexpectedly, just like how Shelly, who was once a TV series producer and executive director did not really expect she would be in the education service. The passion just keeps on burning and her job smooth-sailing.

shelly muar teacher yap
Left 1:Shelly

“My friends were totally shocked as to why I would suddenly go and teach children!” – Shelly

Shelly loved her work with media, but due to conflicts with people made her realised that “the adult world is too complicated”. From there she encountered Yelaoshr and delved herself into the job.

“Actually, prior to joining Yelaoshr, I was also leading a new batch of freshies, guiding them in their work. Teaching children at Yelaoshr, I realised that they are like white papers, allowing us to draw the sun and rainbow. It felt wonderful.” – Shelly

Shelly said that adults have a mind of their own. They are harder to teach and guide compared to the little children. The children may be mischievous, but with love and care, the naughtiest child can be taught. This is Shelly’s understanding after many years of teaching.

Shelly shared a story when she first worked in Ampang. That was a four-year-old child; because he conversed in English at home, he was very unfamiliar with the Chinese language.

“When this boy first came to Yelaoshr, he could only learn one Chinese word per day.” – Shelly

After some time, Shelly started to doubt if this is a waste of time. Shelly’s boss at that time (also her current business partner) comforted her, “These children will have their minds opened and developed some day.” Lo and behold, after not giving up for a few months, the boy was suddenly able to learn four Chinese words per day! This made both Shelly and the boy extremely happy, even the grandfather who fetched the boy was surprised, which gave Shelly a boost of confidence.

Teacher Yap YelaoShr Shelly Muar

After teaching for some time, Shelly realised that Yelaoshr’s teaching methods are very good and she thought of bringing back this set of techniques back home to Muar. Finally, on the 3rd of September 2016, Shelly opened her own learning centre in Muar and is opened for registration.

“There were of course struggles in the process. Some friends felt that this set of techniques are only for city children but I feel that in every location, there will be children needing help in this aspect. Even though not many people know of Yelaoshr in Muar, I believe if you use your heart to teach, your reputation will become great.” – Shelly

To Shelly, the challenge of entrepreneurship is not the recruitment of students but to look for a good teacher. For this, she thinks that she is very fortunate because her teachers are devoted to their job.

“While training our teachers, we used the methods taught to us by Headquarters. However, whenever I observed their teachings, they would actively come up with new, creative and effective ideas to teach the children. This just proves that they put in the effort and details in teaching.” – Shelly

She reminisced, her pronunciation on Bahasa Malaysia was not strong. Because of this, she lacked confidence while providing training to teachers. Subsequently, I called up an ex-colleague from Penang, and she taught classes through the phone.

“This may sound like an awkward idea, but my teachers not only did not reject the idea, they still pay full attention in learning. I felt very comforted as this was a rare sight.” – Shelly

Teaching at Yelaoshr, only teachers who learn and teach wholeheartedly can go further.

Two years in Muar, Shelly also encountered a few situations that touched her heart. She revealed, “Even though Yelaoshr is opened for children ages 3-12, but I made an exception to take in a child in Peralihan. In his entire primary school life and even UPSR, he failed his Bahasa Malaysia. His father once scolded, “I do not have such a child poor in studies!” thus worries his mother immensely. With a nervous heart, the mother brought this child to Yelaoshr early of the year. In classes, I realised that he is a very obedient child. Even though he is much older than the other students but he can learn with other children and pays much attention in class. At the year-end exams, he scored 80 marks in his Bahasa Malaysia paper. His mother was very touched and kept thanking us profusely. What I want to point out is that this child does not hate studying but he just lacked the suitable methods all these while.”

Returning home to build a business, Shelly noted that it is not as easy as she thought will be.

“Many people may think that going back to Muar and opening up a centre is an easy task because it is a place I am familiar with. In reality, for me, who worked in KL for 10 years, I needed immense courage to get it done.” – Shelly

Even though I have my doubts and worries, yet a few reasons made her pushed forward and completed what she ever wanted to do.

“Two years of Yelaoshr in Muar, I realised that all these years I did not accompany my family. All of my time was used on work and travelling. Coming back to my birthplace allowed me to spend more time with my family. Besides, I wanted to do something that can make a difference to the place I called home since young. Through shaping a happy learning place to grow, I had brought in the excellent teaching methods. These are just some things that I can contribute back to my hometown.” – Shelly

The best response to doubt is to be yourself

Before I tell you their story, about the two partners of Taman Mastiara’s Yelaoshr Shi Lin and Hui Xian, I will tell you of their age first – 23 and 25 years old. At such a young age they are already into entrepreneurship, they will have doubts due to their age. Apart from our readers, I am afraid that there are parents who feel the same. Do they have enough experience? Are they matured enough? These are some of the doubts they are faced with in the past.

Both Shi Lin and Hui Xian do not have any university education, but it also meant that they have joined Yelaoshr as teachers for a number of years. Shi Lin recalled that when she first encountered Yelaoshr, the advertisement says “You do not need to have a degree, just a learning heart will do”, thus bringing her to the interview. The same sentence had also moved Hui Xian, “I just graduated and have no direction, I just wanted to accumulate some working experience and decide thereon and I went for the interview.” The two of them got to know each other while working at Laman Rimbunan, Kepong. Because they get along very well with each other, they became great partners at work over time.

Two individuals of contrasting backgrounds working together closely

Shi Lin used to work in the beauty sector and has an outgoing personality while Hui Xian worked in a management company as an administrative stuff. The centre’s person-in-charge saw this special combination of an outgoing and a more reserved personality. Subsequently, they were tasked at different natures of jobs – Shi Lin is responsible to meet the parents while Hui Xian is in charge of training the teachers at the centre.

Shi Lin revealed that even though the person-in-charge gave her this mission, but to her, she personally felt frightened and stress.

“I was only 19 then and was very much younger than I am now. I also lack the confidence in my work. At that moment I was unable to successfully recruit any students, in my heart the pressure steadily raised.” – Shi Lin

She said that the person-in-charge will listen to her conversations with the parents, and then advised her on some technical skills and correction of her verbal tone. After a few months, she was some distance behind the target set for her. She was given a one-month grace period and if she did not improve, she will be demoted back to a teacher.

Shi Lin set her mind to work harder and put in more effort. She started looking for opportunities to observe the conversations between the person-in-charge and parents to pick up some ways and techniques to be applied in her own conversations with the parents. It was as if she was given a magic pill to make her understand things and within the grace period, she successfully recruited 16 students. You can say that she improved rapidly. This greatly increased her confidence, giving her a boost to help her get through.

Hui Xian is responsible for coaching the teachers and supervising their teaching quality. She knows how to teach students but coaching teachers is another set of new knowledge.

“Initially I was too enthusiastic to share my innermost thoughts with the teachers. Therefore, no matter educational backgrounds or information, I would say what I wanted to in one shot. The result was that some teachers do not understand what I was conveying. At that moment I only prepared the content I want to say but I did not consider that some individuals cannot absorb.” – Hui Xian

Later, the person-in-charge taught her a way that she can fully enjoy; that is to learn how to analyse the different characters of each and every teacher and from there match them with different teaching techniques. Hui Xian started to organise her coaching materials to enable teachers with different needs to be able to utilise the skills that are most suitable to them. This also greatly improved Hui Xian’s guiding skills and she was more confident with her coaching job.

After years of working together, when the time was ripe, Shi Lin was encouraged to open her own centre and she found herself the best partner Hui Xian to the joint venture.

The responsibilities of enterprising are greater, actively work to become your better self

Entrepreneurship signifies a new beginning to let Shi Lin and Hui Xian start from zero again and to start learning how to manage their own centre. From recruiting teachers, electricity and water supply to recruit students etc. They had to learn it all. Fortunately, these do not stop them in their tracks but they were enjoying the process and feel grateful for the opportunities to learn. April this year, Shi Lin and Hui Xian opened up their doors at Taman Mastiara. The cooperative structure of the Kepong branch was their reference; one dealing with the inside and one on the outside.

In the beginning, just like what this article mentioned earlier, many parents who saw that there were no students and teachers in their newly established centre and moreover noticed their young age do not really trust them, resulting in no students signing up for classes.

“While working at the Kepong learning centre in the past, they did not need to focus on business performance and only focus on teaching. Now that they are independent, they need to take care of many more tasks. What if there are no students? We can only use the free time to distribute brochures and flyers.” – Shi Lin and Hui Xian

They responded honestly that as teachers it felt awkward to distribute flyers. However, for the centre, despite facing wild dogs and hot suns, they persevered on.

The best response to doubt is to be yourself

Hui Xian said that they were unable to stop others from doubting them, so they could only use their performance to make people change their minds.

“The most important thing is to continuously develop ourselves, to raise our own value. Only then people will have confidence in you and trust that you can do a good job.” – Hui Xian

When they started recruiting students, Hui Xian noted that they used their heart to teach the children and additionally report their progression to the parents to let the parents see the growth in their children at Yelaoshr.

To make herself look more mature, Shi Lin purposely wears formal attire to work. Of course, when the first impression is settled, she has to use her experience to persuade the parents to trust them.

“Some parents will ask about Yelaoshr’s teachers’ qualifications, and I will patiently explain to them the training process of Yelaoshr. It does not matter if they have qualifications or teaching experience. To become a Yelaoshr educator must undergo training to ensure the concepts and methods are unified.” – Shi Lin

Through professional and confident conversations, the parents became their ears and mouth, spreading a good name to build up their centre.

Encountering endless honing, Shi Lin and Hui Xian start to taste the sweetness of success. To understand our own strengths and weaknesses, in addition to seamless teamwork, allowed them to draw closer to times of harvest.

#05 Blessings will come naturally when you have a pure heart to educate children, and not just being indifferent to the profession.

Counting back, I have already been in the education line for 13 years. Till to date, if you are to ask me, “What is the most needed in the education sector?” My answer will be – the passion to persevere on and to teach according to the abilities of the children.

Being a teacher is different from the common office work of white collars. Each and every day, we face very lively children. If on any day you do not have any mood for work, you can be inattentive at work and finished off the basic tasks. However, being a teacher you are unable to do so. If on any day your attention is elsewhere and work is not of no interest, classes for the children that day is doomed. They will lose a day of opportunity to learn and improve. Therefore, it can be seen that the educator’s profession is such a noble one.

Though it is tough, I am not bitter about it but I am happy with it.

叶老师 创办人 叶怡怡

We encounter different children each day, answering the questions they ask, feeling the joy when they learn and even laugh uncontrollably at the jokes they make… You can say that every day is a fresh one. When these children grow up, there will be a new batch of students coming in and that is totally a brand new page to write stories about. How interesting it is!

Facing different students, we cannot utilise the same old teaching methods because not everyone can be applied with the same methods. Teachers have to use limitless creativity to cater to the children’s foundations and personalities to ensure that they will learn something and grow. While guiding children to use their intelligence, we as teachers also cracked our brains immensely.

Nevertheless, we see that teachers in schools are faced with the progression of the syllabus and challenged with the Ministry of Education’s standards; hence, they are unable to be a hundred per cent sure that every student understands the whole chapter before proceeding to the next. At Yelaoshr, teachers are not limited by these restrictions and challenges. We can teach one chapter for a week, ensuring that they learnt fully before moving forward to the next chapter. Due to situations like this, teachers are responsible to the children and parents, not losing consciousness, and so reaped great satisfaction in their work. Yelaoshr provides teachers with the freedom in their teaching to allow teachers to recollect their confidence and the passion of education for the next generation because the line of work they are doing are the things that they should be and want to do.

I am fortunate to meet so many fellow educators

叶老师 230 年度大培训 Teacher Yap
The annual training, 2008, approximately 10 teachers; 2018, over 230 teachers

Yelaoshr is established for 13 years, my teaching audience changed from students to teachers. In order to be certain that Yelaoshr’s teachers are one in mind, we bring forth many training courses and activities for our teachers. One of the main focuses is our teachers’ attitude and teaching techniques.  With only passion and no skills, or have excellent teaching skills but without patience cannot effectively educate the children.

All this training are also a time for teachers to present the best parts of themselves. I always hope that the children can unleash their potentials and it is also the same for the teachers.

Through the training, we can always get to know more about each and every teacher. If we meet people who are not suitable for the job, we will not approve them of teaching. There are some teachers who worked for one or two years and lost their passion will leave on their own. Just like what was mentioned earlier, this job as a teacher cannot be forced. A common white collar can still produce work even though they do not like their job; however, if you do not like children, you are really unable to proceed in this field. The children cannot learn anything from you and the satisfaction from your work is no longer there.

Apart from training, we can understand if a teacher’s teaching methods are working through the progress of their children because, at the end of every phase of learning, the children will have tests. If a teacher is unable to teach them, the children will not pass the tests. At Yelaoshr, every teacher is unable to zombie around as they really need to teach their children well. At schools, we can say that with such a big class it is impossible to take every student into consideration; at Yelaoshr, with the one-to-one teaching, there is no such excuse.

叶老师 2018年度大培训 Teacher Yap YelaoShr

I am very fortunate. After experiencing all sorts of challenges, most teachers still stay back at the end. These teachers truly accept Yelaoshr’s educational concepts and have requirements for themselves. Every now and then, they will use their creativity to produce better teaching methods. These are not the things required by the Headquarters or by the boss, but it is of their own initiative. I always instilled my teachers with a concept – this job is not just working for the boss but for themselves. Teaching the children is like accumulating blessings for themselves. Blessings will come naturally when you have a pure heart to educate children, and not just being indifferent to the profession.

On this road of education likened the spring breeze and rain, I am immensely blessed to have so many walking with me.

Educate yourself first before educating others. Do not hesitate, no matter the circumstances.

To enable children to learn new information, to equip yourself so that you can lead a team efficiently, how much effort are you willing to put in? How much are you willing to sacrifice? Elva, from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, East Malaysia, has been flying back and forth to West Malaysia every month just to participate in training programs. Such frequent travels she did, all because Elva did not forget that first heart in education.

In 2014, prior to exposure of Yelaoshr, Elva was the Creative Mind Training Centre’s joint partner. The centre uses mind mapping techniques as their teaching methods and students’ participation ranges from primary 4 to university students. However, in the process of teaching, Elva realised that although the students have the ability to analyse important points, they have a problem with recognising words.

“To solve this issue, I started to google up about educational bodies that teach words recognising and I bumped into Yelaoshr.” – Elva

In order to gain experience from Yelaoshr, Elva negotiated many times.

Elva 叶老师 创意教学

“The common rule was that to be an entrepreneurship partner requires training at the Yelaoshr Learning Centre, to learn the full set of teaching methods after some time. Due to me living in East Malaysia, I was unable to cooperate and was rejected about five or six times. They told me the reason why I could not just undergo training and straightaway open a Yelaoshr Learning Centre in Sabah. I totally understand their concerns. However, after pleading for many more times, Yelaoshr finally made an exception to allow me to train in a week, then to open up a new centre in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.” – Elva

Reminiscing, Elva thinks that they finally understand that both have similar educational concepts and both parties felt like they have met a friend on the same path, thus, creating the opportunity for Yelaoshr to make an exception.

“My centre and Yelaoshr’s educational concepts are the same. We focused on building up our students’ foundation.” – Elva

Hence, since establishing the Yelaoshr Learning Centre, whenever students have a problem with recognising words at the Creative Mind Training Centre, they will join the classes at Yelaoshr in order for students to fully accept these teaching methods.

This exception has not made Elva felt lucky whereas it turned into a type of motivation, prompting her to be much more diligent than others.

“Everyone trained and taught for a much longer period than I did, and only half a year to a year later opened their centres. I only trained for a week, so whenever there are Yelaoshr training programs conducted in West Malaysia, I would attend them. – Elva

Elva notes that although the program contents are somewhat similar, yet the sharing by many teachers had benefited her.

“Every person’s personality, values and experience are different. Listening to the sharing of experiences by others always gave me new ideas.” – Elva

In addition to participating in the programs organised by Yelaoshr, Elva would take the opportunity to sign up for other courses when she comes to the west. For instance, the NLP program (neurolinguistic programming), leadership-related and communication courses. Currently, Elva flies over for about two times per month.

叶老师创意教学 Elva
Elva believes that continuous learning is an educator’s persistence.

Humbly, Elva notes that her learning abilities are weaker than others. Moreover, she was not keen on learning in the past; hence her educational level is only until Form 5 level. To be able to stand firm and set a foothold in the society, she understands that she needed to work harder, to sacrifice more energy to equip herself and not give up learning new things. There are many successful people in the society. Even if her career is on its tracks, she learns continuously, and this is our example.

When asked if she feels tired or numb due to the many courses she attended, Elva replied that in every stage of her life, everything she learnt and experienced is different. She believes that if she stops learning because her centre is doing well, or the number of students reached its target, she will not reach the peak of her life. Furthermore, Elva said that besides attending courses, applying the things she learnt on teachers, students and parents are also a part of learning. An example she pointed out was, “In these recent years, one thing that I love to encourage was ‘to start from myself’. A lot may comment that what he or she should do but I feel the need to start from ourselves to slowly influence the people around us. It does not matter if it is the implementation of a new technique or to quit some bad habits, the effects will be better than just giving advice or criticising others.”

Teacher Yap Elva
Gaining experience from the grandmaster.

Instead of saying Elva learnt many leadership and education ‘skills’, but to her, what’s most precious is the experiences after implementing information she listened and learn from class into real life. From Elva, we can deeply understand the true meaning of ‘there’s no end of learning’. Hey, isn’t this the “to start from myself” concept Elva shared working?

(Because of Elva, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah has its first Yelaoshr Creative Learning Centre, allowing local children with needs to benefit. Soon, this coming October, Elva will step foot in Miri to bring quality education to children there. We hope that more children will build their foundations strong in recognising words and love learning even more!)
